The Angevins played a significant role in European history, particularly in relation to England and the Kingdom of Sicily. The dynasty began with Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, who married Empress Matilda of England, daughter of King Henry I. Their son, Henry II, became the first Angevin king of England in 1154.

Henry II introduced legal reforms, such as the development of common law and the establishment of the jury system.
