Brazil, officially known as the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest in the world. It covers an area of about 8.5 million square kilometers, constituting around half of South America's landmass. Brazil is home to approximately 211 million people, making it the sixth most populous country globally. The country is characterized by diverse landscapes, including the vast Amazon rainforest, the Pantanal wetlands, hills, mountains, and extensive coastal areas.

The name "Brazil" originated from the type of wood known as brazilwood, which was once a significant resource for the Portuguese Empire. Due to the abundance of this red-colored wood, the Portuguese named the land "Terra do Brasil," meaning "Land of Brazilwood." When the Portuguese first arrived in the region in the 16th century, they encountered local Indigenous tribes who had already discovered the valuable properties of brazilwood. The Portuguese established settlements and began exporting the wood to Europe, leading to the name "Brazil" becoming associated not only with the resource but also with the territory.

It was not until 1822 that Brazil gained independence from Portugal and became an independent imperial constitutional monarchy. In 1889, it transitioned to a federal republic, which it remains to this day.
