The name 'California' originates from the early 16th century when Spanish explorers landed on the western coast of North America. The Spanish conquistador, Hernán Cortés, named the area 'California' after Queen Calafia, a fictional warrior queen in the popular Spanish novel 'Las Sergas de Esplandián'.
