The name "Denim" originates from the French phrase "serge de Nîmes," as the fabric was initially produced in Nîmes, a town in southern France, during the Middle Ages. The fabric was originally known as "serge," referring to the type of weave, until it gained popularity in the United States in the late 18th century. The fabric began to be produced in the city of Genoa, Italy, or "Genes" in French, hence the alteration of the name to "serge de Genes" or "jeans." Eventually, the fabric evolved further and was widely used for workwear in the late 19th century, gaining significant traction due to its durability and resistance. Levi Strauss, a German-American businessman, played a crucial role in the popularization of denim as he used it to create durable pants for gold miners during the California Gold Rush in the mid-1800s. This innovation eventually led to the establishment of his renowned denim brand, Levi's. Today, denim is used not only for jeans but also for various other garments, including jackets, skirts, dresses, and shirts, catering to a diverse range of fashion preferences.
