Florida

Florida is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is the southernmost contiguous state and shares a border with Alabama and Georgia to the north. To the west, Florida is largely surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, while the eastern coast is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Spanning approximately 65,755 square miles, Florida is the 22nd largest state in terms of land area. However, it has the third highest population in the country, with over 21.5 million residents as of 2021.

The name "Florida" is thought to have originated from the Spanish language. The Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, who is believed to be the first European to visit Florida in 1513, named the land "La Florida," which means "the flowery land." Ponce de León named it so because he reportedly arrived during the Easter season, known as Pascua Florida in Spanish, which means "feast of flowers."

The state of Florida has a diverse geography and boasts a unique climate. The southernmost part of the state, known as the Florida Keys, consists of a chain of islands that stretch into the Caribbean Sea. Florida is also known for its wetlands, with the Everglades National Park being one of the most renowned wetland areas in the world. Florida became the 27th state of the United States on March 3, 1845.
