The name Texas is derived from the word 'Tejas,' which was used by Spanish explorers to describe the indigenous Caddo people in the region. When the area came under Mexican control in the early 19th century, it was officially designated as Coahuila y Tejas. The territory was later divided, and the Mexican state of Coahuila retained its name while the northern area became known as simply Texas. On March 2, 1836, Texas declared independence from Mexico, establishing the Republic of Texas.
